Legal Question in Consumer Law in Alaska
I operate a small website that sells Asian stationary. I just received a cease and desist email from a legal firm in London, England claiming that one of my pens features copyrighted artwork. I was completely unaware of this, I bought the pens from an Asian wholesaler & assumed the artwork was produced by the company making the pens. I only have 40 of the pens & only sold one, interestingly enough to someone in England the day before I received the email. I have no problem taking the pens off my website & not selling them, however they are demanding that send them a signed document that agrees to among other things" To pay your reasonable legal costs and compensation arising in respect of our infringement of your artworks set out in Schedule 1 which will be assessed upon receipt of the above information." I have made a total of $2 from the selling of these pens. In a year of running this website I've only made a few hundred dollars, I really not in postion to pay large legal fees. How should I proceed?

Don't sign the agreement. It looks like it may be a scam, quite frankly. Write them a letter to the effect that you will no longer sell the pens, but that you do not choose to pay an unspecified amount for "legal costs and compensation". Or, alternatively, simply do not mention it and see what they do next.
