Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alaska

a collection agency is calling me constantly and telling me I owe them 3000.00 for one credit card debt and 2300.00 on another. One is from 1999 and one from 1997. I have never had credit cards with that limit. I had two in th last 20 years one had a $300.00 max and the other a $250.00. I was pretty messed up at the time and probably never paid them. I would not mind paying what I honestly owe with some interest but this is outrageous. Can they do this?? Do I have any recourse?

Sure. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 USC 1692 et seq., you simply tell them in writing, to stop communicating with you. If they persist, there are penalties you can pursue.
