garnishment

My wife has a garnishment on her Alaskan PFD fund that she gets on a yearly basis to pay off a medical debt. This year they took her pfd, drained her account, and drained my account since her name was also on it leaving us with no money? What are the laws on them taking all money out of a joint account, from a debt she had prior to being my wife?

garnishment is legal. this is being resorted to secure the satisfaction of an obligation.
