I've been charged with a Class A misdemeanor for shoplifting. I have to go to court for it. What should I expect of this experience? What will my punishment likely be? Do I need to hire a lawyer?

Yes, you definitely need to at least consult wth an attorney. The attorney can advise and help you in several ways:

1. determine if the state has a solid case against you;

2. advise you what the likely sentence is in your community and from the assigned judge;

3. consider whether to ask for a different judge;

4. explore the possiblility of a plea bargain or deferred prosecution; and

5. urge the judge to give you, if convicted, the lowest sentence possible.
