Legal Question in Family Law in Alaska

Sue father for college money

I am 23 years old and I have not seen my father since I was 2 years old. He

paid child support (not much) up until I turned 18 years old. I am just about

to graduate with a bachelor's this April. I have gotten all the funding I can

possibly get with federal loans and a private loan (which was just taken away

recently because the school I am attending is online). I have applied to many

many banks for a private loan along with my mother and we are both denied.

They want a cosigner and I don't have one, my mother does not qualify. So I

am left with a balance of $5,568.00 that I can't pay. This is my last hope. Can

I sue my father to pay the left over amount of $5,568 for my college

education?

Re: Sue father for college money

No. Unless otherwise agreed, your father is not responsible for payment of child support or your necessaries (if education were considered a necessary) past the age of your majority. Age of majority in most states is 18 years old. In NY it is 21 years old.

Good luck,
