Family Medical Leave Act
In Alaska, I work for a large hotel chain and have been diagnosed with carpeltunnel. My surgeon says I'll be off for 3-5 months. Can I combine my FML with accrued vacation/sick leave and still be assured that my job is secure?

Possibly, but you will need to negotiate that with your employer. They are not required to combine FMLA with anything else and it may result in their ability to claim that your leave even under FMLA gives them an exception. In other words, if your being gone inconveniences the business too much, it can be denied.
Best bet is to check with your benefits person.
