Legal Question in Immigration Law in Alaska

Implications of providing financial information for sponsorship

My father, who had to claim bankruptcy a number of years ago has asked me to provide my financial information on his behalf--name removed--that he can sponsor his bride from China. I have no information on her. What are the implications of my providing this information? Am I financially responsible for her if things don't work out? What if there is something suspect in her background, will I be held liable? My father says that my name won't be on the sponsorship but that I am just vouching for his financial situation because he has had to claim bankruptcy. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

Re: Implications of providing financial information for sponsorship

You will be a co-sponsor for her immigration petition. Sponsorship is a contract between you and the US government, under which you guarantee that the sponsored immigrant will not apply for public benefit during certain period after she is admitted to US permanent residency. If she applied for public benefit during that period, the government can seek compensation from you.
