Why did you sign? Most people would view that as acceptance of the bid and as a contract.

I cannot give an opinion of this situation without knowing more facts, and viewing the document you signed. It would seem like you accepted the bid, and the contractor might prevail. His damages would be his lost profits on the job, not including the cost of materials or his expenses if he were to win in court.

I suppose your intent was to sign, indicating you had received the bid, but most people would presume the signing was an acceptance. I do not know what wording is on the paper, especially near or above your signature. That would be important. See an attorney--you definitely have a problem, but can't be answered fully here. Any general practice attorney ought to be able to help you, since this is unfortunately not a matter we would accept in our office as a case to open.
