How can i know for sure whether a piece of commercial equipment I am buying has a lien on it.

In addition to requesting the information from the seller, you can do a UCC search through its website.

As a Franchise Attorney I think the other attorney meant to say through the Arizona Secretary of State's website. Their address is: http://www.azsos.gov/business_services/ucc/ You should also have the seller indemnify you for all liens or other claims against the equipment. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific contract wording and advice.
