Legal Question in Business Law in Arizona

verbal contracts

I attended a grief recovery certification program that my grief counselor asked and encouraged me to attend with the intention of working with him to bring the program out to the local community. I took two days off of work (paid time off) and spent $2000 in good faith that when I had completed the program, he and I would begin working on this. We talked about it extensively, making plans on how we would go about it both before and after I attended. I worked on updating his brochure to include myself and talked with many people in the community to begin soliciting clients. He then decided it wouldnt work and backed out without any real explanation. He said he could refer me to people in the area to work with. He also said when backing out he you thought my attending this program would help me with my own journey. I would not have attended this program and paid $2000 to be introduced to strangers to work with or to help me with a journey. I have had no intention, ever of bringing this program to the community on my own. I believe we had a verbal contract that was legally binding. I would like him to compensate me for the money I spent to take this program trusting that we would be working together when I finished.

Re: verbal contracts

The three most important rules of contracts are:

1. Get it in writing.

2. Get it in writing.

3. Get it in writing.

The terms of your understanding seem vague, not well defined, details of who would do what are not specified, no liability or responsibility is expressed, and appear to be exploratory in nature. A verbal agreement can be enforced, but what was the agreement? He apparently did not agree to do anything except talk about possibilities or intentions.
