Is wifi "squatting" illegal? that is using an unsecured wireless network for internet access. I read conflicting answers online

It's better called "stealing internet cable." The answer is a lot clearer if you went out to your neighbor's cable box, put on your own cable, and ran it into your house and plugged it into your TV. It's no different because it's wireless and easier to steal. And, you are hurting someone. You are affecting your neighbor's bandwidth, and you are causing the cable company to charge more money to combat theft and to service its paying customers.
