can you sell a car that is going to be repossesed?

You might be able to sell the vehicle, but you are still going to owe all past payments. This will depend on whether they have obtained from a court an order of replevin. If a court has issued an order the vehicle is no longer yours, you would not be able to sell it. Even you are in a position to sell it, you will still owe the holder of the security interest (bank or assignee) the balance on the loan.
