how do i answer a summons and ask for a continuance?

You would have to file an Answer to the Complaint within the time noted in the summons, which is 20 days if served within the state and 30 if served outside the state. I would recommend contacting the opposing party to request an extension to file an Answer, and do so in writing to maintain a document trail.
