If someone left a summons on your door step, do you have to appear in court?

Re: credit card dept
With one exception, leaving a summons on your doorstep is NOT good service. The law in Arizona requires that court documents be personally served upon "a person of suitable age and discretion residing therein." While the appropriate person doesn't have to personally take the documents, just dropping on your door step when you are not there is NOT good service.
The exception to this rule is an eviction. If a forcible or special detainer action is filed against you as a tenant for breach of your lease agreement, the process server must first attempt to personally serve, but if you are not there, he can tape a true and accurate copy to your front door, and then mail a copy to you certified mail, return receipt requested. You DO NOT have to pick up the document to be served!
