ex-spouse debts

I have been divorced for over 8 years and now suddenly, one of my ex's creditors has hit me with a summons to appear and pay his car debt which is over 8 yrs old. How should I proceed?

Re: ex-spouse debts

1. Dont just ignore the credit company. 2. If you were a signator on the original car purchase, the credit company may be able to seek payment from you. Even if the divorce decree ordered your ex-husband to pay the debt, you may have to pay the credit company and sue your ex for reimbursement. 3. Track down your divorce paperwork and check to see (a) who was given possession of the car in question? (b) who was assigned to pay the debt for the car? ( c) were any provisions made for reimbursement of a former spouse for debt repayment? Try contacting the divorce attorneys. 4. You could try sending a certified copy of the divorce decree to the credit company, if it says your ex is responsible for the car payments. 5. You can, also, request the credit company provide documentation of the debt and why they believe you should have to pay it. The request needs to be in writing and there may be deadline for challenging this. Check the paperwork you were sent for such details. 6. You might want to consult with an attorney who could assist you in this matter.
