Legal Question in Criminal Law in Arizona

18 year old dating 15 year old

My step daughter has a crush on a boy. She told us he was 15. She was 14 at the time, turned 15 a month ago. We have since found this is more than a crush, she has lied to us, and snuck over to his house, without adult supervision. She denies having any kind of sexual relationship with him. We have now found out he is 18. What can we do? She feels she is in love.

As a defense attorney who handles a large number of sex crimes involving minors, let me say that unless there is sex, you are dealing with an adolescent behavior situation, not a legal problem. If there is intercourse, which he or she would have to admit, he could be charged with a felony. This of course depends on the County Attorney's cooperation. At this juncture you might consider informally letting him know the consequences. Practically though, you may exacerbate the situation more with your daughter. If you decide to pursue a legal course of action, give me a call.

This is not a legal situation at all here until the point where Intercourse has taken place. At this point it strikes me as normal Teenage behavior. Having a child myself, I always try to keep in mind the way I was as a teenager. I would just suggest communicating with your children and letting them know how you feel about the situation. Legally there is nothing that can be done at this time, believe me I understand your frustrations and how Angry it can make a parent, but be patient and honest and I think you will find a good path. For my children, unfortunatly my son and daughter were so stubborn and they hard to learn the hard way, however now that they have learned they do listen a bit more often and communicate more with us.
