Technically, a judge can deny your request for new counsel. Although you are entitled to court appointed counsel if you are facing jail or prison time, you are not entitled to the attorney of your choice. The judge makes the determination for new counsel on a case by case basis. Best of luck.
The other attorney's response is accurate. To add to it though generally a criminal defendant can retain private counsel at anytime, unless doing so would unnecessarily delay a set/pending trial. But if you are wanting a new public defender, generally you are stuck with who is assigned to your case. There are exceptions, but as my colleague said it in the end is up the judge.
