What is length of time the federal government can carry on a criminal investigation before they have to charge or arrest or drop the investigation?

Re: criminal investigations
Federal investigations often go on for years. I know this from many cases that I have handled in federal court over the years. If you have not been charged, though, this is a great time to hire counsel and try and keep charges from being filed. I have done this on several occasions, and have cases now where I only wish that my clients had come to me years ago instead of waiting to be indicted. As a practical matter, it's a lot less expensive to hire a lawyer now than after you are charged.
