11/12/2009 Question
I need help to protect my elderly parents from my brothers, who are now trying to manipulate them against me and my 2 sisters who live near my parents and have been helping them for the last 5 years. They tried to get all my parents' financial records so they can have someone write up a will for them. My dad said he's already got a will. I'm afraid they will try to get power of attorney and whatever they can to get control of their finances. My mother is now becoming paranoid and delusional and they are manipulating her. My dad is deteriorating physically and mentally, so it appears they are taking advantage and isolating my parents from me and my sisters.
11/16/2009 Follow-up
The situation had deteriorated and I think the brothers accomplished their goal - to get all of their money. Money was never a factor for my sisters and me in our caring for our parents. But having the parents turned against us after all we've done for them - and knowing the brothers have probably succeeded in ensuring they will be getting all of their estate, has made the money a weapon against us.
I called my brother last week and he said they were getting all my parents' financial records or were writing up their will. Our mom had given me some of the paperwork for 4 CD's which were for me and my sisters. She said they were ours to do what we want. There were other CD's also but I had given them back to her another time. My brother ordered me to return the paperwork for the 4 CD's to my mom so he could get them.
I found out the brothers came again last Friday to see our parents (up ujtil this month, they had only visited my parents twice in 5 years). My sister and I got together with mom, dad, and 2 brothers. The brothers accused us of drugging our mom for a long time, then they accused us of trying to MURDER OUR MOTHER!
Mom was prescribed Geodon 20mg for paranoia and she took only 1 dose (the day the brothers arrived the week before - and had a side effect affecting her walking). The brothers and us sisters were with mom and dad the full day and nothing was said. But the other night, the brothers accused us of trying to MURDER her and said she was ALMOST DEAD! I told them that if they thought he was being drugged, they should have got a blood test. And if they thought she was ALMOST DEAD, they should have taken her to the ER!. The firefighter brother said he was legally above the doctors and pharmacists - and the paramedic brother said he has the prescribing doctor's license in his hand and could pull it anytime. The yelling and accusations of trying to MURDER HER, in front of her, went on and on.
My brothers deliberately defamed my sister and I - and caused my mother, who is paranoid and delusional, to fear for her life. They convinced her that we were trying to kill her and changed the locks on their house. My brothers do not want our mother to get help for her paranoia. It's easier to control and manipulate her keeping her this way.
We were deliberately defamed and are traumatized by the abuse and betrayals and will also probably be cut out of their will - for trying to help them. It was a full-blown coup and it worked.
Now there is no way for us to protect our mother - and our dad will not allow her to get help for her mentall illness. He is being a raging, belligerent bully, like the brothers.
1 Answer from Attorneys
As I told you in the answer to your previous question, you must take action immediately 1) you can call Adult Protective Services and report to them that your parents are being abused and financially exploited and 2) you can file a petition for appointment as guardian and conservator of your Mother, and maybe of your father as well.
