The sons and daughters of the deceased have no obligation to pay the debts of the deceased. Only the estate of the deceased and possibly the surviving spouse are responsible for the debts of the deceased, including medical bills. If there are no assets in the estate, then the creditors are out of luck unless the debt was a community debt, in which case the creditors might try to collect from the surviving spouse, if there is one.
