Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona
I am 18 years old and expecting a baby in February. My mother is fully supporting me while I am in school and her insurance covers me as long as I am a full time student and under 25. Her insurance company said that they would cover the baby when he is born if she either adopted or was granted legal custody by the court. We don't want to do the adoption but what is involved in getting legal custody. She will be providing a home for the baby and fully supporting him until I finish school.

For her to obtain legal custody you would have to willingly give up legal custody and control. This is kind of like guardianship. I don't believe you have to sever your parental rights to go down that road. It's a less permanent situation than adoption. Your mother would have to apply for custodianship or guardianship.
Also, what is the situation with the father? Would he ever want to get back in the picture as to his child?
I expect that the insurance co. would allow coverage if you gave your Mother "voluntary guardianship", which is a temporary agreement and freely revocable.
We can certainly help you consider and then pursue your options.
