Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona
Name change
I want to change my name back to my maiden name. When I got divorced I didn't feel like going through the hassle of changing everything. I also had minor children with the same last name. My children are adults now and I really don't like having my ex-husband's name attached to me. I read something about changing a name by usage. Is that leagl in Arizona?

Re: Name change
To change your name, you have to go through a formal (but simple) process. You would fill out an application and file it with the court (filing fee = $230). The court will schedule a hearing date. At the time of the hearing, if you have done everything correctly, the judge will sign an order changing your name. If you would like assistance with this process, we offer a free initial consultation.

Re: Name change
If you simply begin using a new name, that is a valid legal name. However, you will need a Court Order to get legal documents changed (driver's license, social security card, etc).
We can absolutely help.
I can explain the procedures better by phone or in person. As you can imagine, there is too much to cover via e'mail. We offer free 1/2 hour consultations, in which we can discuss the matter in more detail.
Please call me directly to discuss the specifics of your case, or contact my assistant Alicia or my paralegal Jennifer to schedule a free 1/2 hour consultation.
