Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona
Changing Names
My niece is nine years old and has had no contact with her bio father for eight years. Her step dad whom she has only known as her dad would like to adopt her and change her name (she's been using his name all this time) What is the easiest way to at the very least get her name changed?

Re: Changing Names
There are two ways this can proceed. Either the bio dad can consent to the adoption by stepdad, or, if circumstances are appropriate, the mother can file to terminate bio dad's parental rights and then proceed with adoption. We offer a free initial consultation, so please contact the office (480.792.9770) to schedule a time to meet with Attorney Kristy Blackwell about the details.
Re: Changing Names
The best way to do so is to seek a "termination of parental rights", so that Dad is forever precluded from coming back around. Adoption could then also be possible. However, the "easiest" way, which may not be the best way for many reasons, is to file a "Petition for Change of Name".
We can absolutely help in either process.
I can explain the procedures better by phone or in person. As you can imagine, there is too much to cover via e'mail. We offer free 1/2 hour consultations, in which we can discuss the matter in more detail.
Please call me directly to discuss the specifics of your case, or contact my assistant Alicia or my paralegal Jennifer to schedule a free 1/2 hour consultation.
