my child is 18 and has finished high school. I am still behind on some child support payments. if i file bankruptcy, will i still be liable for the back child support?

Child support is not dischargeable in bankruptcy. You will continue to owe any arrears until you have either paid in full or have entered into some sort of settlement agreement with the other parent to reduce or discharge the arrearage balance. The other party is not obligated to agree to a settlement, but it might be something to consider.
