Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona

giving up parental rights to biological mother

A friend of mine has had a child with a woman, they were never married, and now she doesn't want him to be a part of their lives and is asking him to sign over guardianship of their child to her. Does this also mean that he will not have to pay child support if agreed upon by the mother?

QUESTION:

A friend of mine has had a child with a woman, they were never married, and now she doesn't want him to be a part of their lives and is asking him to sign over guardianship of their child to her. Does this also mean that he will not have to pay child support if agreed upon by the mother?

ANSWER:

NO. "Signing over guardianship" does not amount to a termination of parental rights and responsibilities. So he will still have pay child support.
