Grandparents rights out of wedlock

My son got a girlfriend pregnant in 1998 and the baby was to be born 4-99,well the girl took off in her 7 month and disapeared,we were told the baby was born stillbirth by friends never got a call from the girl.She called 3-24 and spoke to me and said the baby didn't die and she wanted to speak to my son.The following night my son called the # she left and they spoke briefly about the baby got her name she will be 2 next month and we desperatly want to have this baby in our lives.If you could direct my son and ourselves how to go about it,we'd appreciate any help.We are not sure if we should contact law enforcement or how to go about finding birth records.

We could certainly assist you in getting involved with this child. Your son has the right to establish "paternity", which would then allow him to seek custody or at least visitation.

You, as grandparents, also have the right to assert your own independant visitation rights, by filing an appropriate petition with the Court.

As part of the process, we are also allowed to demand the medical records directly from the Mother or the hospital. Law enforcement really would have no ability to do so.
