How long does it take for the process to get started when you file for child custody?

It depends on the circumstances. If it is an emergency petition, the court will hold a hearing within a few weeks of filing. It not, the court will hold its initial hearing within a few months. If the matter is contested, it could take years to resolve but most can be finalized in 6 to 12 months.
