Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona

I have two sons with my ex- we were never married. My children have had no contact with their father since August of 2007. I would like to file for sole custody and change their last name to mine, we have never been to court over child custody and support- he did sign both birth certificates. The only problem is I don't have any contact information for their father- could I say he abandoned them? Please help I do not know what to do- I dont want child support or anything like that!!
