Legal Question in Family Law in Arizona

Wills

when a divorce is finalized is it true that the beneficiary of the Life insurance policy that is held is null and void unless specified in the divorce decree that a life insurance policy is to stay in effect? I was the beneficiary to my husbands life insurance policy and when we got divorced he passed 4 months later and the policy went to the contingent benificiary. Is this correct?

Re: Wills

Generally, this is correct. The divorce invalidates the naming of a (now ex-)spouse as the beneficiary unless a) the beneficiary form is re-executed after the divorce or b) the divorce decree orders that the spouse remain the beneficiary.
