action to forclose
an action to forclose was served against me for a past tax year, I paid the taxes, do I still need to respond to the summons, the clerk said it was not needed to do so, but that seems odd.

NEVER ignore a summons and complaint. Always answer it. That is your chance to tell the court that you paid the taxes and get the foreclosure dismissed. It also may be your only opportunity to pay the taxes if you are mistaken. There could be more than one year of taxes that you owed. So you could have paid one year and didn't pay the year for which you are getting foreclosed.
If a default is entered, they could evict you from your house even if they are wrong.
DO NOT WAIT TO ANSWER, YOUR HAVE A LIMITED TIME TO ANSWER THE COMPLAINT.
It will cost you more to try to correct a default if it is entered because do not answer.
The stakes here are so high, I would recommend consulting an attorney immediately. If you make a mistep, you could lose your home and any equity.
