How to I defend myself in an out of state lawsuit (New Jersey) ?

I was a corporate officer in a real estate corporation operating under a national franchise. I sold my stock to another party and they defaulted. They have filed a law suit against all 3 of us personally. I had several verbal agreements with the regional respresentatives who encouraged, and participated to avoid the transfer fees. They defaulted on the sales contract with me and also never reported or paid the obligation to the franchise. The franchise had contact with them and tried to collect the money owed. I never had an opportunity to correct this in 1998 and didn't know the problem until the suit was filed.

Can they enforce or collect on a money judgement in Arizona by just filing in New Jersey? I really cannot afford an attorney and feel I don't owe this. What is my recoursez?

You need to have an attorney review not only the corporate documents you mentioned, but the lawsuit as well. If you are going to represent yourself, you will need to file an Answer to the out of state lawsuit within the time limits (typically stated on the Summons).
