Legal Question in Employment Law in Arizona

Wages

I worked for an investment company and quit without notice. I worked one day a week about 3-6 hours per day. I cashed my last paycheck and about 7 days later my bank notified me that a stop payment had been issued for it. The bank took the money from my savings. What legal grounds do I have. I have a claim in with the state labor board but is there anything else I can do?

Re: Wages

Whether you have against the employer any sort of claim is going to depend on why the issued on your check a stop-payment. If they did it simply to deprive you of your wages, you have a claim under the Wage Payment Act. You could either bring suit yourself or, possibly a better solution in your case, file with the Arizona Industrial Commission a formal complaint.

If, however, the employer issued the stop-payment, because it discovered you legitimately owe it money, their action would be legal. Sometimes this occurs when an employer issues an overpayment in one pay period and then deducts it in another.
