Legal Question in Employment Law in Arizona
wrongful dismissal & bad references given
If a company offers me a job out of state after weeks of discussion, new hire paperwork/tax forms submitted and background check and drug screen passed, are they legally able to refuse me the job after I relocate at my own expense, incurring major expenses? Reason given was that previous job tagged my file ''do not rehire'' do to short notice given, even though they supplied me with a letter stating either Company or I could sever our working relationship at anytime without cause. Do I have recourse against previous employer for causing me not to get job due to slander? If so, what type of lawyer should I retain? This involves a major corporation in Hawaii working on Government contracts, and I feel that dicrimination has occured, making it a hostile workplace, and this is the reason I sought other employment.

You reference AZ law, but live in Georgia, so I'll throw in the Georgia perspective. Generally, employment is "at will" and you can be terminated for any or no reason, with very few exceptions related to discrimination. Same with job offers being withdrawn. If you quit an old job, incur expenses, it is generally at your own risk unless you have a contract. I am not sure what claim you think you would have against the prior employer, or how you think it is "slander" for saying they would not rehire you. What would be false about that statement?
