Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Arizona

I moved into an apartment in June and decided to downgrade to a smaller one in the same complex 4 months later. We signed a lease when we moved to the first one but when we moved to the new apartment they still haven't given us a lease. We are now wanting to buy a house and they are telling us we are on a one year lease and it restarted when we moved apartments. We never signed a lease. Can they force us in a year lease without us signing it? Our previous one was only a 6 month lease.
