home lost to human error

home went up for auction i was told by the attorney of the firm who held the deed to contact the sherriff dept and they would have all the information i would need to know.I was told by 2 different people that i would have up to 6months to redeem mt home.2days ago i recieve a letter posted on my screendoor that i have up to 9/15/08 to vacate the property.ive been misinformed by the sherriff dept and now me and my children are homeless
