Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in Arizona

Sexual Harrassment Jokes?

While explaining improper fractions to a room full of adult educators, the phrase ''Dolly Parton Fraction'' was used to imply a top heavy fraction. (Which was taught to a Math Teacher by his own student.) No inappropriate body parts were mentioned, and nothing more was said. However, one educator accused the presenter of Sexual Harrassment. Is this a case of sexual harrassment?

Re: Sexual Harrassment Jokes?

By law, sexual harassment occurs where behavior is severe and pervasive enough to create a "hostile environment." One off-hand comment like the one you've described does not add up to a hostile environment. However, if you are bothered by the sexual implications of the comment, you should probably mention your sensitivity to the teacher and ask that she/he not use the expression again. If for some reason you are uncomfortable bringing this up with the teacher directly, find another teacher or administrative person you feel comfortable raising it with, and ask them to mention it to the teacher. Good luck.
