If you provide them with $1.00, they will have to be listed as a beneficiary in the probate, get copies of all court filings, actually be distributed that $1.00, and it costs the estate a lot of money, aside from rubbing it in more than just stating that you make no provision for that person. By identifying them, and stating that you make no provision for them, and specifically exclude them, you avoid the claim that they were inadvertently forgotten.

Beware of writing your own will. The cost of an attorney will is cheap, and avoids planning and drafting oversights.
