ownership of domain name

Back in February of this year, a client asked me to purchase a domain name, using his partner's credit card. I could not reach the partner for authorization to use the card, so I offered to purchase the domain name with my own credit card, which required me putting the domain name in my own name. The client said I would be reimbursed, and I was never reimbursed.

The client and I have parted ways, not in a friendly way, and I've offered to sell him the domain. He's threatening lawsuits and such. Am I, in fact, the legal owner of the domain name?

The short answer is yes you own the domain name. Now, depending on the facts and circumstances of your situation, you may owe the other person a fiduciary duty arising from your former business or professional relationship. You should consult an attorney to make sure about your specific situation.

You likely own the name. Since you bought it supposedly for your client, he may have a certain right to purchase it from you. That is somewhat dependent on your agreement.

Do you have anything in writing?

I probably need more information since I don't see what he is threatening to suing you for. There could be some responsibility on your part for what is on the website or what your business relationship was. I would need to talk with you further.
