Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Arkansas

Ex-boyfriend threw out mail

I had medical documents that were sent my ex's address after I had moved back to Oklahoma. I was living in arkansas. He notified me once to call the people and change my address which i did after getting off the phone. I recieved one document and that was it. Now I have two debt collection agencies saying that I owe them 700 to 800 dollars. He never sent me my mail nor was I notified about it. What can I do?

Re: Ex-boyfriend threw out mail

First of all, the mail should have been forwarded to your correct address, or it should have had the statement "return to sender" written on the document. Then, it should have been and returned to the post office. It is illegal to deliberately destroy another party's mail.

Otherwise, you should contact the collection agency (or hiring company) to explain why you didn't respond. I recommend contacting the company itself, not the collection agency. Also, send a letter, do not attempt to correct the situation with a phone call. This will help you later because your credit report is being adversely affected by the collections referral.
