Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Arkansas

i am in arkansas. i owe a former employer (a lumber co) a debt. i have made payments every month since I quit. last night i was served a summons for the debt. my question is can they do this? i thought if i was making payments and they were excepting that they couldnt. it is causing more debt bc of additional court fees. they also lied in their claim that i have not made a payment in 6 months. i can prove that to be untrue. Even more frustrating is that I know this is not a common practice for all debts to the company.
