Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Arkansas

Received summons for a bill paid 10 months ago

While at work today I was served papers from the Little Rock District Court for a dentists bill I paid in February. When I called his office they said my account balance was zero and that they had received full balance from me back in february. I need to know what I have to do now. I'm pretty sure I don't have my cancelled check since I only keep them for about 6 months.

On the court papers will be the name and phone number of the lawyer that is suing you. Call him and tell him you paid the bill. Your bank will have an image of the cancelled check in their system, and should be able to print it for you.

Ask to see verification of the debt from the lawyer.

If you cannot find proof that you paid the bill, you may need to go to the dentist's office and get a statement from them in the form of an affidavit that states that you paid the bill, and use that in court.

However, if you tell the lawyer to check with the dentist's office, that will probably clear the matter up.

Calling opposing counsel has some risks, and if you are in any way uncomfortable doing so, you can get a lawyer to call for you.
