consequences of driving while drunk

if my son wrecks and totals a vehicle that is registered in my name, and he is intoxicated and winds up in the hospital

due to his injuries, can i be held responsible for any of his medical bills if he can't pay them.

Yup, sure can. How old is he and is he your dependant are inportant here. There are two things going on. 1) neglegent entrustment. If you knew or should have known that he might drink then giving him the car in the first place is neglegent. 2) Doctrine of necessaries. As your dependant, you have to provide necessary things such as foow shelter, medical treatment, etc.

Perhaps a lesson here ... medical payments coversge on your insurance. It costs little, but really comes in handy. Lots of folks only have min liability and not b/c they think it is a good idea, but b/c it is the law. Lots of folks have no insurance for whatever reason. Bad reasoning!
