Legal Question in Family Law in Arkansas

Is Arkansas an alimony State?

My wife and I have been married for ten years. She has not held a job for any length of time during our marriage. The longest job she held was for about 10 months. Will I have to pay her some kind of monthly payment in addition to child support? Also, we have been raising a niece for the past 6 years. We do receive about $80/ month for her already. Will I have to pay child support for her in addition to the two children we have together?

Re: Is Arkansas an alimony State?

I practice law in California and I am unsure as to the laws

in Arkansas. In california you are required to pay alimony

in addition to child support to your wife, usually for half

the length of the marriage regardless of whether she worked

during the marriage. Obviously if she did not work

she stayed at home with your children and the courts consider

this her contribution to the household. I recommend you

contact the superior court clerk in your county and

ask them if they know of any divorce clinics which can

help you out and inform you as to what your wife is

entitled to as far as support.
