Firing current attorney

I filed for divorce in 3/02. I fired the attorney handling my case last month (Feb 2003). The divorce had been on hold for almost a year. Do I have a time period to obtain another attorney? What if I let the lawsuit sit until I am ready to go through with it? If I have to take action, can I just write the court to drop it?
