How many times may the defendent , by law,postpone a trial?
How many times may the judge ,by law, postpone a

Do criminal cases always take presidence over civil cases?

In general terms there are no amount of times
provided by law on granting continuances. The rule
is one of procedure; that most jurisdictions promote
a fast resolution of cases.
There exist the speedy trial rights of the accused
that requiere Courts to give precedence to criminal
cases over civil ones.
