As a general rule, engagement rings are gifts in anticipation of marriage. So, in most cases, the person who gave the engagement ring is entitled to its return if the wedding is cancelled. That said, there are exceptions. For instance, if the recipient helped purchase the ring or if the ring originally belonged to the recipient's mother/grandmother, then it wasn't really a gift. In the first case, the person who gave the ring may be entitled to part of its value. In the second case, the recipient would get to keep the ring.
