Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Arkansas

My mother died about a year ago and has no will. I have no idea what her assets/investments are. My step-father wants me to sign away any rights to her estate and is petitioning for appointment of administrator of her estate. They were married for less than 3 years. Per intestate law, I am entitled to part of her estate, correct? Do I need to hire an estate attorney?
