probate time limits

I would like to know if ther are any time limits I should be aware of concerning the filing of probate of an intestate estate or the accounting of assets contained in the estate of my father at the time of his death.

In almost all cases, for both practical and legal reasons, the sooner probate is filed the better for all involved. An inventory should be filed within 60 days of the appointment of a personal representative. I think you need to speak with an attorney in more detail.

A probate action must be filed within 5 years of the date of death. However,it is much better, as stated by the other response, to do it as fast as possible so that many of the issues can be addressed before they get "stale" and difficult to deal with. Sooner the better!!
