some one is suing me for defamation of character because i wrote a letter to her bosss. what is defamation of character?

A letter to a boss is not defamation. For Defamation something must be published or spoken to the public. The Public is defined as a sufficient number of people as to cause injury to the character of the person who is the subject of the spoken or published information.
