You can continue to maintain H1B nonimmigrant visa status until you obtain resident status in the U.S. based on marriage to a U.S. citizen: www.h1b1.com/Uscitizen.htm

Your H-1 visa status remains valid while work for your employer. As long as you continue working for your employer you can maintain your H-1 status until you obtain your permanent resident status in the U.S.
